Japanese Beetle (Popillia japonica) Newman, 1841

 

Popillia japonica is native to East Asia, including Japan and China. It was introduced to eastern North America in the early 20th century and reached California in 2005; also recorded in the Azores and Southern Europe. The adult measures 8-15 mm, has green thorax and head, and iridescent coppery-brown wing covers. These beetles emerge in late June-July and feed on foliage, flowers and fruits of trees, shrubs, and herbs. The grabs feed on the roots of many genera of grasses. This species is considered invasive outside of its native range.
